Helicopter rides are relatively inexpensive in the Faroes, especially if you share with others. They’re a widespread form of transport for crofters, for example, to get from the capital, Tórshavn (the only capital in the world with free local buses?), to the more remote islands. When I booked the helicopter with a couple of other photographers I knew that the clouds can take a while to clear over these rugged North Atlantic islands. The conditions were perfect when we finally took to the air – the only way to get a full perspective of the spectacularly dramatic and wild scenery. An unforgettable ride.

Six picks: Easter at York Minster

Six themed shots from the archives at www.timbirdphotography.com

It’s Easter, and here we are in Yorkshire in northern England where the cherry trees are in magnificent bloom and the daffodils are lifting their golden heads all over the place. We’ve just been to York for the day. The last time I visited York was in about 1967 on a caravanning holiday with my family to Scotland. Your Easter Six Picks gallery this holiday week is of shots from York Minster, one of the biggest Gothic Cathedrals in northern Europe. The history of the current building dates back to the 13th century. Happy Easter!

Six themed shots from the archives – a new blog project

…in which I open the vaults containing my vast archive of travel photographs.

Nights are getting shorter here in Finland as summer approaches.

Here are some reminders of what we’ll be missing in the Finnish capital:

Image

New look central Helsinki: the “Citizens’ Square” beneath the Music Centre with Sanomatalo, HQ of the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper, to the right and the Pike sculpture by Reijo Hukkanen in the foreground.

Image

Rare sighting of the Northern Lights or aurora borealis on the island of Harrakka in March 2013. The aurora has reached a cyclical peak and sightings have been more common than usual this far south in the last year or so.

Image

Lights from the Juttutupa restaurant near Hakaniemi reflected on the water.

Image

Helsinki’s National Opera House and the tower of the Olympic Stadium.

Image

Apartment blocks at Siltasaari, close to the Hakaniemi square.

Image

Fairground rides at the Linnanmäki amusement park.

Six picks: early morning at Jaipur flower market

Six themed shots from the archives at www.timbirdphotography.com

Jaipur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan, has an especially colourful morning flower market. Marigolds are sold by the sackful for temple decorations and garlands. Vegetables are on sale too, but it’s the bustling activity, the early morning light illuminating the bursting sacks of flowers and the aroma of rose and marigold petals that make this place special.

Nerdy stuff: all taken with a Fujifilm X-Pro1 camera with 18mm and 35mm lenses – some of the first shots I took using this camera. This was the first “system” camera in the Fujifilm X Series and although subsequent cameras have made big improvements, with faster focus and more features, this has maintained its appeal. It’s still my number one choice for so-called street photography. It’s back to basics: aperture and shutter speed with the digital equivalent of film speed, and a pair of alert and open eyes.
